El sábado 24 de mayo se celebra el Día Nacional de la Epilepsia una enfermedad que padecen en España 400.000 personas
Cerca del 60 por ciento de los ciudadanos ante un ataque de epilepsia "erróneamente" introduciría un objeto en la boca del enfermo para evitar que se mordiera la lengua según indicó hoy el miembro de la Sociedad Española de Neurología (SEN) el doctor Antonio Gil-Nagel durante la presentación de la encuesta sobre Conocimiento de la Epilepsia realizada por la Federación Española de Epilepsia (FEDE) con la colaboración de Pfizer y avalada por la SEN.
Durante una crisis epiléptica la respiración se interrumpe porque los músculos respiratorios del tórax y el diafragma no funcionan correctamente por lo que no sirve de nada forzar la apertura de la boca del paciente o introducir un objeto en ella explicó. Las consecuencias de ese comportamiento pueden ser mucho más graves que la propia crisis ya que "pueden causar lesiones permanentes en la mandíbula provocar roturas de dientes o impactar el objeto en la laringe".
El problema es que en España 400.000 personas padecen epilepsia y cada año se diagnostican 20.000 nuevos casos lo que significa que "es muy alta la probabilidad" de encontrarse ante una crisis. Por este motivo es importante que en la medida de los posible, se extienda la idea de lo que se debe hacer ante un ataque . Así es recomendable mantener la calma alejar los objetos que puedan hacerle daño ponerlo de costado o girarle la cabeza hacia un lado tratar de colocar algo blando bajo la cabeza y aflojar aquellas prendas que puedan dificultar la respiración y sobre todo llamar a urgencias.
La encuesta ha demostrado que "existen muchas ideas erróneas sobre la enfermedad" que han provocado que existan muchos prejuicios y falsos mitos sobre la misma. Lo demuestra el hecho de que el 80 por ciento de los encuestados crea que la epilepsia puede causar discapacidad con frecuencia cuando en realidad y tal como afirmó el doctor Gil-Nagel sólo el 30 por ciento de los enfermos sufren una epilepsia discapacitante a la hora de realizar una vida normal. "Aproximadamente el 70 por ciento de los casos está bien controlado y la patología no supone un problema importante para el paciente por lo que puede trabajar y hacer vida normal" explicó.
Por otra parte la encuesta que se que realizó en Madrid y Barcelona a más de 1.300 personas demuestra que aunque casi el 81 por ciento de los encuestado afirma conocer la enfermedad la gente piensa que es una enfermedad mental, hereditaria y contagiosa señaló el director de la Unidad Médica de Pfizer el doctor Juan Álvarez. En este sentido destacó que cerca del 40 por ciento de los encuestados --sobre todo menores de 18 años y los mayores de 65-- considera que la epilepsia es una enfermedad mental. Sin embargo se trata de una enfermedad neurológica crónica que "cualquier persona puede padecer a cualquier edad".
Los pacientes con epilepsia presentan entre otros síntomas alteraciones en su estado de ánimo (ansiedad o depresión) y trastornos del sueño que si no son tratados producen una merma en su calidad de vida. Además existen varias reacciones físicas que ayudan a reconoce una crisis epiléptica es el caso de caídas súbitas sacudidas involuntarias pérdidas de conocimiento problemas respiratorios o rigidez en el cuerpo. No obstante se puede sufrir un ataque espontáneo y aislado lo que no significaría que la persona sufra la enfermedad asimismo la epilepsia "no siempre causa secuelas" aunque "dependerá del tipo de epilepsia la edad del paciente y la causa". DÍA NACIONAL DE LA EPILEPSIA.
El próximo 24 de mayo con motivo de la celebración del Día Nacional de la Epilepsia la FEDE llevará a cabo una campaña de sensibilización en toda España. Así según indicó su presidenta Francisca Lozano se repartirá diverso material y folletos informativos que explican la manera de identificar una crisis convulsiva y cómo se debe actuar ante ella.
A su juicio es necesario informar sobre esta patología para luchar contra el "estigma social" existente que hay sobre las personas que padecen la enfermedad y sobre todo formar a la población acerca de cómo actuar y atender a un afectado por una crisis convulsiva. Además explicó que "enfrentarse a la enfermedad es una lucha muy dura tanto para los afectados como para los familiares" por este motivo cree que es necesario que "se hable alto y claro de la enfermedad con absoluta libertad".
"Tenemos que empezar a luchar para que estos pacientes tengan una calidad de vida para que tenga un empleo digno y se los respete y reconozcan los derechos que por ley les pertenecen" afirmó.
En el mismo sentido Gil-Nagel advirtió de la necesidad de "valorar la enfermedad no como una enfermedad rara" y por tanto aumentar el número de recursos sociales y médicos que se destina a la enfermedad. "La epilepsia es una enfermedad que aunque es frecuente y su carga es alta no percibimos porque con frecuencia las personas con epilepsia que tienen un problema más importante apenas salen a la calle por temor a las consecuencias de sus crisis" explicó.
